Beyond the Canvas

We are excited to share the progress of our "Beyond the Canvas" project, a community-based art initiative funded by SeeMe Scotland and supported by the Byres Community Hub.

The inspiring journey created through “Beyond the Canvas” culminates in an exhibition proudly featured as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival and Black History Month Celebration at the Byres Community Hub, University of Glasgow. Through diverse mediums like art, crafts, poetry, and photography, the exhibition offers a powerful glimpse into the personal growth and collective strength of the participants.

You are warmly invited to the launch of our “Beyond the Canvas” exhibition, titled “Voices Unveiled”, inspired by this year’s SMHAF theme, IN/Visible.

We had an amazing time at Finn’s Place at a dance and yoga therapy session!

Participants had a great time. Here’s what they had to say:

“Thanks to Ume, Layla and Reem for organising this therapy. It was very good and relaxing physically and mentally and also released stress. Thanks to EWfC for organising. Looking forward in future to more like this”

“Thank you for the wonderful time together!”

“I had a lot of fun today, I got rid of negative energy and laughed from my heart. I had fun with my friends. We shared the yoga lessons. It was beautiful and not tiring. The dancing was very beautiful, not elaborate and simply. Thank you to everyone who did and contributed to this activity.”

Empower Women for Change is a Black and Ethnic Minority women-led community organisation, established in 2015, in response to the growing needs of the diverse women in Scotland. Gaps in support were identified in relation to the empowerment and advancement of women’s rights and active participation in all aspects of civil, economic and political settings. We aim to nurture leadership skills and promote active citizenship among women in response to the increasing needs of women in Scotland concerning empowerment, equality, rights, and participation in civic, social, economic, and political aspects.
